7. Technical Requirements

The thesis may be produced using word-processing software. Here are general AUS format requirements you must follow when producing your thesis. (The technical formatting checklist included in Section 9 should help you prepare your manuscript.)

7.1 Typing the Text:

  • Text should be produced using 1½ line spacing.
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph ½ inch, and do not include blank lines between paragraphs.
  • Use the standard typeface of 12-point size, Times New Roman or Garamond.
  • Use italic script only for foreign words, and book and journal titles. Do not italicize headings or subheadings in your table of contents or in the text of your thesis.
  • You may use a larger type size for the title of the thesis and chapter headings but do not use a size larger than 14 points.
  • Use a single typeface for almost the entire thesis: the front matter, text, headings, references, display pages and page numbers. You may use different typefaces only within tables, figures and appendices.
  • Do not bold headings on the table of contents or in the body of your text, including tables and figures.
  • Use International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols for any transcriptions.
  • Only one space should follow all punctuation.

7.2 Printing the Text:

The thesis is printed on one side of the page, not both sides.

7.3 Paper Requirements:

  • Use A4, white and un-punched paper.
  • The final copies submitted to the AUS Archives for binding should also be printed on 20 lb weight, 50 percent rag content.

7.4 Margins:

  • The left margin of all pages must be at least 1½ inches. This applies to pages of tables, figures and appendices as well as text.
  • The other three margins within the main body of the thesis should have margins of 1 inch. Page numbers also must be on or within these margins.
  • Follow the margin requirements stipulated in special pages such as the abstract and the table of contents.
  • You may use left or full justification.

7.5 Pagination:

  • The front matter section should be numbered with lower-case roman numerals (e.g., iii, iv, etc.) beginning with the abstract, which is numbered as page iii.
  • Page numbers using the lower case roman numerals should be centered at the bottom of each page.
  • The text section should be numbered with Arabic numerals (e.g., 1, 2, etc.) counting through text, bibliography/references and any appendices. Text numbering may be centered or flush right.
  • The title page and approval page(s) are not numbered although they are counted in the page numbering.
  • The copyright or blank page and the dedication, if used, are neither numbered nor counted in the page numbering.

7.6 Tables, Figures and Graphs:

Tables should be formatted as specified in the APA style manual. (Some graduate programs suggest using the Turabian method for formatting tables and figures. This is also acceptable. Check with your specific graduate program director). Appendix B7 includes sample tables formatted according to the APA style. See the thesis formatting checklist in Section 9 for additional information on figures and graphs.

7.7 Text Citations:

Source material will be documented in the text using the formats and procedures outlined in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). In essence, you will document sources (that is, acknowledge the ideas and words of others that you are using in your thesis) by citing the author(s) and date(s) of your sources in the body of your text. Your reader will obtain the full source citation from the list of references that follows the body of your thesis (see Section 6.3, Back Matter.)

You may wish to order a copy of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.) online at http://www.apa.org/books/4200060.html. A copy of the APA style manual can also be consulted in the Office of Graduate and Undergraduate Programs.

7.8 Content Footnotes:

You may wish to use content footnotes to support information in the text. They should be used only occasionally and sparingly. If used, here are the requirements:

  • Footnotes will begin on a separate sheet of paper at the end of each chapter in which they appear.
  • Footnotes are numbered sequentially within each chapter.
  • The heading “Footnotes” is centered on the first line within the margin.
  • Indent the first line of each footnote 5–7 spaces and number the footnotes (superscript) as they are identified in the text.

7.9 Units of Measurement:

The use of the metric system (Systeme International) is required. Where older measurement systems are used, the SI equivalent must be presented in parentheses or footnotes.

7.10 Corrections:

Handwritten corrections will not be accepted. The use of correction fluid, correction tape, pencil, ballpoint pen or felt-tip marker is also not allowed in the final copy. Corrections must be made so that the final copy is clear and clean.
