
AUS hosts exhibition of Belgian artist
His Excellency Marc Van Den Reeck, Ambassador of Belgium, and Chancellor Winfred Thompson inaugurated an exhibition of the works of the celebrated Belgian painter and architect Henry van deVelde on February 19 in the Exhibition Gallery of the Schoolof Architecture and Design (SA&D) at AUS. The exhibition ran through March 12.
The exhibition, entitled Industry in Service of Art, Art in Service of Industry, featured 57 exhibits of the renowned painter, designer, architect and writer, who was considered the chief theoretician of Art Nouveau, champion of the applied arts and prominent in developing a new architectural expression in Europe in the early 20th century.
The opening of the exhibition was followed by a reception in the Rotunda of the Main Building and an illustrated lecture by Dr. Lieven Daenens of the University of Ghent, Belgium. The event was organized in cooperation with the Royal Belgium Embassy and its Cultural Friends.
