Illuminating Fabrication exhibition opens at CAAD Gallery

An exciting exhibition entitled Illuminating Fabrication opened recently at the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at American University of Sharjah (AUS). The exhibit, being held at the CAAD Gallery, is the result of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary studio offered during the summer semester, a combination of the Digital Fabrication Techniques and Exploring Design through Fabrication courses.

The goal of the studio was to introduce students to a broad range of working methods, including digital and analog processes and techniques. Students utilized the newly renovated CAAD lab facilities to produce a series of projects including two-dimensional collages, material studies and as the final project, an object of illumination.

"In addition to introduction to fabrication methodologies, the summer studio offered the students a unique opportunity to explore the integration of hand-working and digital skills within a conceptual framework," said Tonya Sweet, Assistant Professor in Design, who taught the studio along with Kevin Sweet, Assistant Professor in Architecture. "The work produced, and currently exhibited, reflects the students' personal ideas regarding cultural transformation," she added.

According to Samar Ata Halloum, a student in the studio, "My experience this summer was amazing. I learned a lot being in a studio that taught so many skills and allowed us to then design and produce our own lamps. The exhibition is a great way for us to show others what we achieved in this class."

The exhibit is at the CAAD Gallery till September 29.
