Strategic Plan for Research and Innovation

CAS  >  Departments  >  English  >  Research  >  Strategic Plan for Research and Innovation

This Strategic Plan (2018-2022) outlines the department's priorities for the next four years. Underpinned by the university and college mission, strategies and values, this plan presents our commitment to providing an outstanding educational experience for our students, to increase recruitment, and to develop our own potential in terms of research, innovation and public engagement activities.

The Department of English will foster research and scholarly activities among all its members (e.g., publications, research collaborations, interdisciplinary projects, research projects, grants, research supervision) through a number of specific research thematic areas. In particular, the department will aim to:

  • explore the development of a new Center for Cultures in Contact
  • foster a strong research environment and identify specific research thematic areas in the department (Future and Emerging Technologies in Language Sciences; Cultural Production; Transnational Passages; and The Dynamic of Languages)
  • recruit and support new and current faculty through an effective mentoring system: planning, time release, mentoring, monitoring and support will be key elements in achieving these goals
  • support faculty in grant applications; develop collaborative research projects with faculty in the department and explore interdisciplinary opportunities
  • develop collaborative research and innovation activities with external partners in the region and more globally
  • publish high-quality research
  • develop a strong public engagement strategy
  • develop high-impact research projects that have impact outside of academia
  • manage research and research activities/innovation to maximize relevance and commercialization (e.g., professional development programs, training programs for teachers)
  • develop a proposal for graduate programs in the department
  • host prestigious book series and international journals, symposium and conferences
