Laboratory Experiments in Wave-Structure Interaction (September 2020)
Breakwaters protect port and harbor entrances to provide navigation safety and limit wave conditions at berths for safe cargo transfer operations. Effects of climate change such as sea level rise and increase in wave storminess are expected in the near future, and therefore research into breakwaters' hydraulic performance is essential. This seminar will present laboratory experiments carried out during this summer at the University of Porto, Portugal. A model, at a scale 1:35, was built and tested under a broad range of wave conditions for evaluating hydraulic stability and wave overtopping.
About the Speaker
Filipe Vieira is a Coastal Scientist/Engineer with a Master of Science in Hydraulics and a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Sciences from Portugal. He has experience working in Europe, South America, Africa and the Middle East on a variety of ocean, coastal and port engineering projects. He worked for the government and private sectors in both engineering and research projects. He was involved in the design of some of the largest coastal developments in the Middle East, such as New Doha Port, Bluewaters Island, The World Islands, La Mer, Khalifa and Mina Zayed Ports.
