Biography

Joachim Diederich has been appointed as Professor and Department Head, Department of Computer Science, beginning September 1, 2005. He is also an honorary professor in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering as well as the Centre for Online Health at the University of Queensland, Australia. Dr. Diederich's professional career includes four years as a team leader at the German National Research Center for Information Technology (GMD) and more than two years at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) in Berkeley, California. He has also been a full professor at Queensland University of Technology ( Australia) and Sohar University ( Oman; affiliated with the University of Queensland).

Dr. Diederich has published eight books (three as single author), 50 book chapters and journal articles, and more than 100 peer-reviewed conference papers. In addition, Dr. Diederich has a considerable history of success in securing research grants: two Australian Research Council (ARC) large grants as first chief investigator since 1996, two ARC Collaborative/SPIRT grants as first chief investigator, one ARC RIEF (Infrastructure) grant and one current ARC Discovery grant as second chief investigator. As a recognized innovator, Dr. Diederich was selected as winner of the E-Health category in the prestigious “Secrets of Australian IT Innovation Competition 2003.”

Dr. Diederich 's qualifications include a habilitation from the University of Hamburg ( Germany), a doctorate (summa cum laude) from the University of Bielefeld ( Germany), and a master’s degree from the University of Münster ( Germany).
