Accurate Numerical Modeling of Moving Interface Involved in Industrial and Biomedical Problems (November 2015)

Abstract: The propagation of moving interface phenomenon is involved in a large number of biomedical and industrial applications such as crystal growth, cryosurgery, electrocardiology, iceberg evolution, etc. An important feature of this type of problem is that the shape and position of the interface are unknown a priori and have to be determined with accuracy. In recent years and with the developments in scientific computing, numerical modeling starts to play a crucial role to provide the necessary tools for understanding the physical processes. However, the numerical simulation of moving interface is extremely challenging and it is necessary to develop accurate numerical procedures for solving the appropriate physical models.
The objective of this talk is to present an efficient and accurate numerical algorithm to solve especially two problems: the propagation of the electrical wave of the heart, and the liquid-solid interface in phase change problems with convection. We will present the mathematical models and numerical methods developed for both problems. To illustrate the performance of the proposed methodology, numerical simulations on cardiac electrical activity and on pure gallium melting will be explored. A comparison with the experimental and the numerical results of the literature will also be presented.
