Conference: Change and Development in the Contemporary Middle East (December 2012)
The AUS International Studies Association is hosting the conference Change and Development in the Contemporary Middle East. It will feature undergraduate student-authored papers that examine the sweeping changes taking place in the Middle East.
The papers will employ methods from specific disciplines in the social sciences/humanities and may assess economic, political or social changes in the region. Potential focus questions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
* What are the effects of societal structures on the creation of states in the Middle East?
* What is the cause of economic growth or decline in Middle Eastern countries?
* What are the implications of state policies on economic and social structures?
* What is the role of religion in forming state policies?
* How has the state emancipated or secluded women? And what ramifications does this have
on the social status of women in the Middle East?
* Has economic growth in some Middle Eastern states resulted in the confinement of women
to the private/domestic sphere?
* Why are civil wars so prevalent in the Middle Eastern region?
* Will democracy promote political stability in the region?
* Does economic growth imply political stability?
Selected students will be asked to provide a 15-minute presentation on their paper, which will be followed by a discussion.
