Lecture: The Study Quran (December 2015)
The College of Arts and Sciences presents a lecture by Dr. Joseph Lumbard through the Dean's Lecture Series.
Abstract
Based on over 40 exegetical sources, The Study Quran is the first full-length running commentaryon the Quran in the history of Western academia. It showcases over 1,200 years ofinsights on the Quran from multiple disciplines, among them linguistics, jurisprudence, philosophyand theology. The presentation will outline the project and highlight the manner in which multipledisciplines were employed to compose the commentary. It will begin with a discussion of translationstudies and the principles employed for developing a Quran translation that achieves a balanceamong eloquence, precision, and consistency. The presentation will then demonstrate the principlesbehind the composition of the commentary, detailing the manner in which the polysemicnature of the text gives rise to multiple different readings of the Quran. After presenting otherfeatures of The Study Quran, such as the topographical maps, the presentation will transition intoa discussion of the potential significance of this project for the fields of Islamic Studies, QuranicStudies, Middle Eastern Studies and cognate disciplines.
