Lifescapes Beyond Bigness (September 2018)
CAAD Lecture Hall, AD1-102
September 18, 2018
05:00
Lifescapes Beyond Bigness, the UAE National Pavilion exhibition at Biennale Architettura 2018, explores the interplay between the physicality of architecture and places, and the dynamic choreography of everyday life. The lecture will present the exhibition’s theme, which investigates the role of quotidian landscapes in accommodating, enhancing, and facilitating “everyday” social activities, and invites visitors to experience important human-scale landscapes in the UAE that are often overlooked in common perceptions of the UAE’s mega-development discourse.
The lecture will examine a curatorial selection of four urban typologies from the UAE’s diverse landscapes: residential neighbourhoods; networks of streets and sikkak (alleyways); urban blocks; and natural landscapes, and present an exploration of their physical characteristics, behavioural rhythms and life, and the urban and architectural design traditions that have shaped them
SPEAKER:
Dr. Khaled Alawadi, Curator of the UAE National Pavilion the16th International Architecture Venice Biennale, 2018
