Physics Seminar: Tracing the Chemical Enrichment History of the LMC Galaxy from the Integrated Spectra of its Star Clusters (December 2018)
Abstract:
The star formation and chemical enrichment histories of Local Group galaxies are traditionally studied by analyzing their resolved stellar populations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The integrated light of star clusters can be studied using ground-based telescopes to much larger distances. They represent snapshots of the chemical evolution of their host galaxy at different ages. I will present a simple theoretical framework for the chemical evolution based on the instantaneous recycling approximation model and infer a chemical enrichment history from the star formation history using observational data. I will demonstrate that ages and chemical composition of 15 star-clusters derived from the fitting of their integrated optical spectra reliably trace the chemical enrichment history of the Large Magellanic Cloud and will briefly discuss how this approach can be used to study star formation histories of distant galaxies at the level of details that are currently available only in a few nearby galaxies.
Speaker: Dr. Randa Asa’d obtained her PhD in Physics from University of Cincinnati, USA in June 2012. She joined AUS in Fall 2012. Her area of research is observational astrophysics with the focus on studying the unresolved stellar populations, young and intermediate-age massive star clusters and the chemical evolution of galaxies using the large optical telescopes in Chile.
