The Use of X-ray and Related Techniques in Cultural Heritage (December 2014)

Archaeometryis a branch of science that utilizes scientific methods in studying culturalheritage. In this talk, Dr. Nasser Hamdan, Department of Physics, will present the use of some of the physicaltechniques such as XRF, XRD, SEM/EDS and RAMAN spectroscopies in studyingcultural heritage projects and artifacts. The talk will introducethe National X-ray Fluorescence Laboratory (NXFL) and its materialcharacterizations techniques, followed by a few casestudies in applying these techniques to cultural heritage investigations. Amongthese cases will be:
- the conservation project of Al-Dur Temple in Um Al-Quwain
- the provenance study of Meliha artifacts (pottery and metallic artifacts)
- the forgery study of Al-Kaaba Curtain
- corrosion of jewelry artifacts fromMeliha site
- pigment and manuscript studies
