Through The Looking Glass (April 2012)
Lamia Gargash (BSVC, 2004 ) adjunct faculty of design in the College of Architecture, Art and Design opens her first solo exhibition at The Third Line Gallery in Dubai.
Through The Looking Glass opens on the 25th of April at The Third Line Gallery in Dubai. The large format photographs represent two years of research and collaborative photo sessions, with her assistant photographer Manny Durmiendo, hair stylists and prosthetic artists.
Making the large-scale photographic images, according to Gargash "was quite scary; especially since we have a huge gap in the market in the UAE when it comes to special effects services." The work is about self-perception and explores the artists subconscious dialogue with imperfections exaggerated in meticulously technical images that are both a desire for perfection and a comment on flaws. The works traverses the space between two different worlds reflection and recognition."Our reflection how we are seen by the other differs vastly from the view of I have of myself and how others view me," states Gargash in a recent blog, "I wanted to bring those defects to life how we view ourselves and our psyche if we could see it reflected in the mirror of reality."
Lamia Gargash received her Masters of Arts in Communication Design (2007) from Central Saint Martins School of Art & Design, London, UK and her Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication from the American University of Sharjah, UAE (2004). This semester has taught DES160 Introduction to Photography.
Selected Solo Exhibitions include Presence at Galleria Marabini, Bologna, Italy (2011), Presence Series, Galerie Brigitte Schenk, Cologne, Italy and she participated in the 2009 UAE Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy.
