CNC Router Lab

CAAD  >  CAAD Labs  >  Digital Fabrication  >  CNC Router Lab

Computer-numerically-controlled (CNC) machines are tools that use CAD/CAM software to take a 3D model and generate a path for a cutting tool (eg. cutter, router bit, or knife) to remove material from a large block called stock.

These machines are responsible for assisting in the manufacture of virtually everything we purchase or use today and ensure that major operations of production can be automated with improved speed and quality of manufacturing.

CNC has been applied to 2-axis tools such as lathes, cut-off tools and slitting operations, but perhaps the most significant applications are found in 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis tools such as milling machines, stone cutting equipment, grinders, router tables, robotic welders, material handlers and an astonishing variety of other tools.

These tools require sophisticated CAD/CAM software to translate 3D models into simple text files that directly control tool motion through combinations of linear and rotational motion. CNC machine tools are deeply embedded in industrial processes where they have been in use for over three decades, and they have a growing and visible effect in building technology.

Our CNC Router is a large format industrial tool capable of routing and milling complex geometries in 4 axes. Some plastics, foam, wood products, and non-ferrous metal sheet material can be machined with this equipment.

Machine Specifications

The maximum thickness of foam that can be milled is 100mm, wood thickness varies based on object geometry. The maximum routing area is 1500mm x 3000mm

Procedure

1- Once the digital model has been prepared send an email to [email protected] with details of the job (size of material, type of material, course name.) Indicate an open time slot from the reservation page in the email subject. At the same time drop your .3dm file in the CAAD Labs Students ‘classes’ folder. Emailed files won’t be accepted.

2-It is strongly encouraged to discuss the routing file with the Digital Fabrication Labs Specialist before buying or gluing the stock.

3- CAAD Labs staff will check if everything is in order and confirm the milling date. On the day of your routing job, bring the stock material to the CNC Routing Lab 10 min before the starting time.

Access

Students do not have access to this lab. Files are run by CAAD Labs staff and trained lab assistants only. Please contact our Digital Fabrication Labs Specialist for additional information.

Lab Policies

Please refer to Appendix C of the CAAD Labs’ Policies and Procedures Manual* for this lab’s policies, along with other general lab policies.
