Health Education

Health education is a vital tool in fostering a healthier community by providing individuals with the knowledge and resources to make informed health decisions. At AUS, health education topics are offered to the university community through various platforms, including the clinic's digital media channels. These topics are aligned with the World Health Organization's (WHO) monthly health programs, ensuring that the content is timely, relevant and globally recognized.  Key health themes that reflect WHO’s ongoing initiatives—addressing issues like disease prevention, mental health, nutrition and environmental health among others—are featured on a monthly basis. By integrating WHO’s monthly programs, AUS ensures that students, faculty and staff are equipped with the latest health information and are encouraged to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Health Insurance Plans and Medical Coverage

For Students

At AUS, we prioritize the health and well-being of our students. As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive support, we offer a Student Medical Insurance Policy that ensures that students have access to quality healthcare services during their time at AUS. All registered AUS students, including both undergraduate and graduate students, are eligible to enroll in one of two medical coverage options:

Al Buhaira National Insurance Company (ABNIC)

AUS has partnered with a reputable insurance provider, Al Buhaira National Insurance Company (ABNIC), to offer limited medical coverage to our students.

Coverage
  • essential medical services, such as doctor's visits, laboratory tests and prescription medications
  • emergency medical treatment within the UAE
  • hospitalization expenses, including room and board charges
  • outpatient specialist consultations
  • ambulance services
Eligibility
  • Mandatory for AUS-sponsored undergraduate or graduate students.
  • Open to students who do not have their own private insurance.
Enrollment
  • Eligible students may enroll during the registration period for each semester.
  • To enroll, click here, select Al Buhaira Medical Insurance, and enter the required information (AUS VPN required).
  • Students who do not submit the required documents by the specified deadline are subject to the below:
    • If the student’s residency visa is sponsored by AUS,the medical insurance charges will apply, but the plan will not be activated until the requirements are completed.
    • If the student’s residency visa is not sponsored by AUS, medical insurance coverage will be changed to “University Medical Center Coverage” by default. The student will be responsible for any penalties or fines imposed by the health authorities due to delays in submitting required documentation or gaps in coverage. AUS will not be liable for such fines.
  • Students on an Abu Dhabi visa are required to submit a certificate of continuity from their previous insurance.
Network Coverage and Policies

Students who change their visa sponsorship or obtain a residence visa issued by a different emirate during the semester must submit a copy of their updated residence visa to [email protected].

Consultations with Specialists

Consultation with a specialist and/or other doctors requires the student to obtain a referral letter from an AUS on-campus doctor during working hours.

Emergencies

If you live off-campus and face a medical emergency after working hours and on holidays, please visit the nearest hospital from the list of network providers.

Students Coming from Abroad

Students coming from abroad should purchase travel insurance that covers the first 30 days of their stay in the UAE.

If you do not  have medical insurance, you will be enrolled in ABNIC. However, we strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance to cover you for up to 30 days when you first arrive in the UAE for medical emergencies, including hospitalization, and to allow time for your AUS medical insurance enrollment to be processed. Please note that your ABNIC medical insurance will only be issued after your residence visa has been issued.

Your medical insurance is linked with your Emirates ID card. Your Emirates ID card must be presented everytime you go to an external medical provider or hospital at the time of your treatment or visit. To generate an e-card that states your ABNIC ID number, it's recommended that you download the ABNIC app (ABNIC Health Vault) on your phone.

Graduating Students

The medical insurance will remain active as long as the visa is valid for AUS-sponsored students. Charges will apply in full if the visa remains active at the start of the semester following graduation.

Non AUS-sponsored students will have their medical insurance canceled after their graduation date.

If the student is on Abu Dhabi or Dubai residence visa sponsorship, he/she needs to submit a signed No Objection on Canceling of Medical Insurance (NOL) form to [email protected] to complete the cancellation process. Without the signed NOL, your student account will continue to be billed for the health insurance premium plus any health claims you incur. This will result in a hold on your account, and you will not be able to receive your diploma or transcript until the hold is released.
