The Evolving Foundation Studies Program at RISD (May 2014)

You are cordially invited to attend the lecture "The Evolving Foundation Studies Program at RISD" by Joanne Stryker, Rhode Island School of Design (RSID).

Stryker will focus on where the RISD program is now, the changes that have been made and are being made, and the ideas being discussed for the future. She will also reference other foundation studies programs at other art schools in the US.

Stryker began teaching at The Maryland Institute, College of Art in the late 1970s, after earning her MFA there in 1977. In 1978 she began to teach at the Rhode Island School of Design where she has taught drawing and design in the Division of Foundation Studies, Illustration, and Architecture. She has served as Dean of the Division of Foundation Studies at RISD since 1996 and has been involved in the evolving curriculum of that program since then.

Stryker's work explores the nature of artifacts and human perception through drawings depicting other works of art and architecture. Her two-dimensional interpretations of three-dimensional form--sculpture, pottery, friezes--exploit the interplay between various modes of perception, creating intricate still life's outside the confines of time, place or historical context. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, including one-person exhibitions in New York City. Her work has been reviewed in the New York Times, and various art magazines.

In 2008, along with Fritz Drury, another RISD faculty, Stryker published a book on drawing titled Drawing Structure and Vision.
