UAE and the Road to a Knowledge Economy

About the Presentors:
Dr. Kai Chan is an advisor at the Emirates Competitiveness Council (ECC). In this capacity he provides rigorous analytical support to the initiatives of the ECC (including a stint with the Expo bid team and quantifying the extent of the UAE's R&D sector in 2012). He is responsible for identifying data gaps within the country that impact the UAE's national competitiveness and helping to identify impactful initiatives for the nation. His work also entails monitoring the UAE's performance in international ranking reports such as the World Economic Forum (WEF)'s Global Competitiveness Report and INSEAD's Global Innovations Index .
Dr. Abdullatif AlShamsi joined the Institute of Applied Technology as a Director General in June 2007. He holds the rank of Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UAE University. Dr. AlShamsi received his Ph.D. from Duke University, USA in 1997 and received his master's and bachelor's degrees from Boston University. His appointments at UAE University included the post of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research, where he founded and managed the externally-funded office for research and science (eFORS) to strengthen industrial/academic partnership. More recently, he founded a University-wide Internship and Work Integrated Learning (iWIL) program to bridge the gap between learning and work.
