AUS awards athletic scholarships
Student-athletes at American University of Sharjah (AUS) were awarded athletic scholarships for Spring 2013. This was announced at a special ceremony held in the AUS main building yesterday, February 27, 2013. Dr. Thomas Hochstettler, the AUS Provost, and Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, congratulated the students on their achievements.
Dr. Al Shehhi congratulated the Athletic Scholarship recipients and emphasized the importance of balancing their studies and sports in a productive manner. "This semester, we have allotted 25 percent of the Athletic Scholarship slots to our athletes in individual sports. It is one of our strategic priorities to promote individual sports by providing our student-athletes with all available resources and platforms that will enable them to compete at the highest level and achieve their goals," she said.
The recipients this semester are Talal Hasan Al Marzooqi, Abdulla Ayesh AlBarguthi and Ramy Hisham Mostafa for men's soccer; Musaab Khalid Khan, Ankur Gopal Maheshwari and Shahrukh Khan for cricket; Khalil Sido for men's swimming; Ahmed Ismaeel Al Madani and Ghazi Ben Said for men's volleyball; Samer M. Hijazi for men's badminton; Julie Maha Doughan and Rima Ziad Baghdan for women's basketball; Sumayya Nizar Taha and Munirah A. E. Alshami for women's volleyball; Shailee Vipul Kothari for women's table tennis; and Sally Masoud for women's swimming.
The scholarship program improves and develops sports at the university and consists of a 50 percent tuition remission. Granted on a renewable semester basis, the scholarship supports student-athletes who have limited financial recourses and who demonstrate athletic excellence as well as outstanding sports qualities.
