AUS student first Middle East Africa regional winner of the Helen Lansdowne Resor Scholarship
American University of Sharjah (AUS) student Rawan Obaid was recently awarded the prestigious Helen Lansdowne Resor (HLR) Scholarship by advertising giant J. Walter Thompson Company for distinguished creative advertising abilities. The scholarship is named after the first female copywriter of the industry and J. Walter Thompson employee Helen Lansdowne Resor. The award was launched as a means to acknowledge the importance and efforts of women in the advertising industry, as well as to provide support and mentorship to young women who aspire to join the creative ranks.
A third-year multimedia design student in the College of Architecture, Art and Design at AUS, Obaid is among the first set of recipients of the HLR Scholarship and the first Middle East Africa regional winner. She will receive a $10,000 academic scholarship, a three-month internship at the regional J. Walter Thompson office in the summer of 2016 and employment consideration upon graduation.
Obaid explains that her online portfolio was a driving factor behind winning the award and said, "To me, winning Helen Lansdowne Resor Scholarship measured how hard I have worked. It was a reason not only to congratulate myself, but everyone who put effort into making it a reality." Her online portfolio can be viewed at www.behance.net/Rawan_Obaid.
Obaid encourages other female students to apply for this award as she explains, "It is a priceless way to build confidence in yourself and stand out based on your talent."
