Supply chain management (SCM) involves the flow of materials and information among all of the firms that underpins the “value proposition” of a product or a service, from the source of raw materials to the end-user. Today, SCM represents a great challenge as well as a tremendous opportunity for most firms. SCM is an interdisciplinary field emphasizing cross-functional linkages and inter-connected systems. The discipline draws heavily from several areas such as operations, procurement, logistics, marketing, information systems and strategy. These inter-connected systems ultimately form the foundation for the provision of goods and services to the user (consumer).
Supply chain professionals contribute significantly to maximizing revenues, customer satisfaction and sustainability, while minimizing costs, waste and organizational risk. A career in SCM offers students the opportunity to contribute significantly to organizational effectiveness by designing and managing the efficient flow of goods and services from the points of their creation to their ultimate consumption or disposition. SCM majors can work in various industries, including manufacturing, process industries, the service sector, education and government. In particular, career options may include procurement managers, supplier relations specialists, inventory managers, sustainable demand planners, transportation managers, supply chain risk managers, and procurement or logistics planners and analysts.
