Ultra-Short, Tightly-Focused, and Super-Intense Laser Pulses for Particle Acceleration (March 2016)
PHY216, Physics Building
March 14, 2016
16:00 - 17:00

Dr. Yousef Salamin, Professor of Physics at AUS, will present a talk devoted to showing how analytic expressions for the electric and magnetic field components, of an ultra-short (axial length L less than the Rayleigh length zr, or even the wavelength) and tightly-focused (waist radius w0 at focus less than a wavelength) laser pulse of the radially-polarized variety, may be derived from the full set of Maxwell equations in a vacuum. Preliminary results of electron acceleration, from rest to tens of MeV kinetic energy, due to interaction with a single such laser pulse, albeit of petawatt power and linearly-polarized, will be shown.
