Graduate Policies and Procedures

Graduate Student Association (GSA)

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is a registered student-run association at AUS that represents the interests and concerns of graduate students. Through various activities and initiatives, such as meetings, networking events, sports, research discussion groups and more, the GSA enriches the lives of graduate students and advances their interests academically and socially. All graduate students are automatically members of the GSA for each semester in which they are enrolled. The GSA is managed by an elected group of students (GSA Board). Meet the Team

Vice Provost for Graduate Studies

Dr. Mohamed El Tarhuni

Mohamed El-Tarhuni is the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and a Professor of Electrical Engineering at AUS. He has held several academic administration positions at AUS, including the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies (2017–2021), Associate Dean for Graduate Affairs in the College of Engineering (2014–2017) and Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering (2006–2014). He joined AUS in 2000 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering. Prior to his time at AUS, Dr. El-Tarhuni was a member of technical staff at Nortel Networks Wireless Technology Labs in  Ottawa, Canada (1997–2000). 

Dr. El-Tarhuni received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, in 1997. He received his BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Benghazi, Libya in 1986, and 1990, respectively. His teaching and research interests are in the area of wireless and digital communications. He has more than 100 published articles and two issued US patents. He has served as a founding member, general chair or technical chair for several conferences, such as the International Conference of Modeling, Simulation and Applied Optimization (IMSAO) and the International Conference on Communications, Signal Processing, and Their Applications (ICCSPA). He is a senior member of the IEEE.

Yosr Mohammadnoor

Yosr Mohammadnoor has a broad range of professional experience over the span of her career, having worked in key Abu Dhabi government-affiliated organizations such as The Higher Colleges of Technology, Masdar and most recently The National Health Insurance Company­—Daman.

Her work has primarily been in the fields of project and portfolio management, as well as strategy and planning, with a focus on creating a project management culture within her recent organization.

She also has a proven successful record in managing large-scale higher education aptitude assessments and initiatives in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education of Abu Dhabi.

Mohammadnoor holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ajman University of Science and Technology, UAE, as well as a master’s degree in international management from the University of Phoenix, USA.

 

Assistant to the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies

Glorinda Jellie Serapio

Glorinda Jellie Serapio holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in financial management, from the Philippine School of Business Administration. With over a decade of experience in human resources and administrative support, she has worked extensively in both the Philippines and UAE. Prior to joining AUS, she held key roles in human resources and executive administration across the education, payment processing and insurance sectors. Known for her strong organizational skills, professionalism and ability to manage sensitive information with discretion, Serapio has consistently supported leadership and operations in both academic and corporate environments.

What are the admission requirements for master's programs?

Applicants must hold a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). English proficiency is also required.

First, create an account on the AUS application portal, apply.aus.edu. You will receive an email to verify and activate your account. Once your account is verified, visit apply.aus.edu again and click on the Apply Online tab to start your application.

What are the English language proficiency requirements?

A minimum IELTS score of 6.5, TOEFL iBT score of 80, or EmSAT Achieve English score of 1550 is required. Some programs may have higher requirements.

Is there an Accelerated Master's Program (AMP) available?

Yes, AUS offers an Accelerated Master's Program (AMP) for high-achieving undergraduate students to pursue a master's degree in a shorter time frame.

What is the duration for completing graduate degrees?

Master's degrees must be completed within five years, and doctoral degrees must be completed within ten years from the date of initial registration, although both programs can be completed in a shorter period.

What are the tuition fees for graduate programs?

What is the process for international students regarding degree equivalency?

International applicants are required to obtain a Certificate of Equivalency from the UAE Ministry of Education and Scientific Research.

What is a Graduate Assistantship?

AUS offers Graduate Assistantships to students on a competitive basis. Assistantships cover full or partial tuition waivers and/or a stipend. Graduate assistantships may come in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) or Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA).

How can I apply for an assistantship?

Master’s and PhD students can apply for an assistantship directly on the admission application form.

When do I know that I have been granted an assistantship?

After you receive the letter of admission, your program coordinator or department head will notify you via email about the decision regarding the assistantship and the details of the award. You need to respond within a specific period of time to confirm your acceptance of the assigned assistantship. A contract will be issued by the Office of Graduate Studies at the beginning of each semester stating the conditions of the award. 

With whom should I follow up concerning the assistantship?

You should follow up with your department head or program coordinator regarding the assistantship.

If I am working, would I be considered for assistantship? 

Yes, students who are employed may still be considered for a partial assistantship. Please discuss this with your department head or program coordinator.

How long can a student receive a graduate assistantship?

Graduate assistantships may be awarded for up to four semesters for master’s students and up to eight semesters for doctoral students.
