About the workshop 

This workshop for MATI students and other interested members of AUS will consider the issue of the paucity of literary translations from Arabic into English. Is this paucity related to orientalist/cultural prejudice as the primary explanation, as it is sometimes claimed? Or, are there other structural factors that can help explain this situation? If so, what evidence can we adduce to support this?

This is not a formal lecture but a workshop in which the students are invited to participate. If time permits, a short text relating to the translation of humour will be attempted in a workshop format.
