Faculty Response to Ethical Issues at AUS (November 2012)

This presentation discusses the results of a survey conducted by AUS professors Sami Tabsh, Hany El Kadi and Akmal Abdelfatah on issues related to faculty ethics at the university. The survey consisted of multiple-choice questions equally divided between the categories of teaching, research/scholarship and service. The study showed that approximately one-third of the faculty respondents indicated their unawareness of the university's code of ethics. A large number of the responding faculty considered issues related to grade change and plagiarism to be extremely serious. Preferred courses of action by senior faculty were commonly stricter than those of junior faculty, and no definite trend was observed between the responses of faculty based on their discipline. Faculty who were aware of the faculty's code of ethics, administrators, and females were generally in favor of seeking information from the suspect faculty on issues involving dishonesty before taking the matter up to the higher administration.
