An author of non-fiction and biography, Landeg White was born in south Wales in 1940 and now lives in retirement in Portugal. He spent his professional career teaching in the University of the West Indies, Trinidad (1964-1968), the University of Malawi (1969-1972), the University of Sierra Leone (1972-1974), the University of Zambia (1974-1979), the University of Kent at Canterbury (1979-1980), the University of York (1980-1997) where he directed the Centre for Southern African Studies, and Universidade Aberta, Lisbon, Portugal (1997-2010).
His books include V.S. Naipaul: a Critical Introduction (Macmillan, 1975), Capitalism & Colonialism in Mozambique: a Study of Quelimane District (with Leroy Vail, University of Minnesota Press, 1980), Oral Poetry from Africa (with Jack Mapanje, Longman 1983), Magomero: Portrait of an African Village (Cambridge University Press, 1987), Power & the Praise Poem; Southern African Voices in History (with Leroy Vail, University Press of Virginia), and Bridging the Zambesi: a Colonial Folly (Macmillan, 1993). He has also published eight collections of poetry, viz., For Captain Stedman (Peterloo Poets, 1983), The View from the Stockade (Dangaroo Press, 1991), Bounty (Dangaroo Press, 1993). South (CEMAR, 1999), Traveller's Palm CEMAR, 2002), Where the Angolans are Playing Football: Selected & New Poems (Parthian Books, 2003), Arab Work (Parthian Books, 2006), and Singing Bass (Parthian Books, 2009, along with a novel Livingstone's Funeral (Cinnamon Press, 2010).
His verse translation of The Lusíads of Luis Vaz de Camões (Oxford World's Classics, 1997, rev. ed., 2001) won the TLS translation prize for 1998. His verse translation of The Collected Lyric Poems of Luís de Camões was published by Princeton University Press in 2008.
