Towards Increased Resolution of the Fabric of Architecture (April 2016)
Alissa Andrasek will lecture on the impact of new technologies on design, architecture and construction through the examples sourced from her design practice Biothing, and start-ups she co-founded, such as Bloom Games and Ai Build.
Her work is at the forefront of novel computational design processes and robotic construction, as well as short-term and long-term views on where architecture might go. Worldwide construction is at the threshold of additive manufacturing being available in 1:1. 3D printing introduces the possibility of blending material states at high resolution of detail, with the capacity to increase a building's performance, introducing mass customization in any level of detail and yielding novel aesthetics for design.
Andrasek's research lab Wonderlab at the University College London is working on engineering previously unseen levels of intricacy and novel tectonics in design and architecture, mining resources of new technologies such as robotics, 3D printing, HPC (High Performance Computing such as GPU-run supercomputing), computational physics and generative algorithms.
Alissa Andrasek is an architect, curator and research based educator of architecture and computational processes in design. She is a founder of Biothing (biothing.org) operating at the intersection of design, material and computer science, and a partner of Bloom Games (bloom-thegame.com).
