To raise awareness and funds in the fight against cancer, American University of Sharjah (AUS) will play host to Relay for Life, a global initiative that is the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world. To be held November 17-18 at the AUS sports field, the event is being organized by Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP), a non-profit organization founded in 1999 under the directives and patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah.
Being held in the UAE for the very first time, Relay for Life is a fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track for 24 hours. Each team is required to have a member on the track at all times, signifying the arduous journey of those afflicted with the disease. It also highlights the fact that cancer never rests. Across the world, more than four million people in 20 different countries have thus far raised over five billion dollars for the fight against cancer.
AUS will set up a special Relay Village at the venue for the event, providing a place where participants can camp and where entertainment and refreshments will be made available to them. This family event provides an opportunity to celebrate the victories of cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to the disease, and fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work undertaken by FOCP.
Individuals from all walks of life can participate and walk around the track at their own pace. Relay for Life is for people of all ages and fitness levels.
