AUS community cleans up its campus
The Office of Sustainability at American University of Sharjah held a cleanup event on campus on December 14. Fifteen volunteers dedicated two hours over the weekend to collect litter in areas on the west side of campus. The volunteers included students, faculty and members of the AUS community.
This event was a part of the Clean Up UAE campaign organized by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG). The cleanup at AUS was also supported by Bee'ah, the Sharjah Environmental Company.
For a week starting on December 8, the custodial service on campus was asked to not clear the west side. The two-hour cleanup collected 44kgs of litter. Three-quarters of this collection were plastic bottles, takeaway coffee mugs and other recyclable materials.
A selection of the collection will be on display in areas around campus. The rest of the litter collected was sent to Bee'ah for segregation and recycling.
