AUS holds two-day blood donation campaign
The American University of Sharjah (AUS) Health Center, in association with the Sharjah Blood Transfusion and Research Center, held a blood donation campaign November 16-17, 2015. The campaign witnessed a great amount of support by the AUS community that helped replenish the supply of certain blood types. The campaign received 229 registered students, of which 114 donated blood.
Yahia Mansour, a fourth-year AUS student majoring in industrial engineering said, "This is my second time donating blood and doing so makes me feel good about myself. It is important to the lives of others in need and I highly encourage my peers to do the same."
Dr. Muddassir Mahmoud, a general practitioner for the Central Blood Bank Center in the UAE, which is responsible for supplying blood to hospitals across the UAE, stated that there are factors that may prevent individuals from donating blood. Age limit is one such factor and an individual should be between the ages of 18 and 65. He also stated that weight plays a huge part in whether a person should or should not donate blood. In addition, taking medicines such as antibiotics and insulin, or having travelled to Africa in the past few years, or having malaria for instance, prevents the individual from being a viable donor as well.
Regardless, Dr. Mahmoud encouraged students to donate blood stating that it is actually beneficial for them to donate half a liter of blood every 56 days, and there is not a single disadvantage of doing so. He also said that people with high blood pressure and who donate blood regularly can control their blood pressure and lower their chances of having strokes.
The blood donation campaign concluded on November 17, 2015.
