AUS multimedia design students light up Brazil
The streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil will be lit up this month with a series of multimedia LED creations by students from the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at American University of Sharjah (AUS).
As part of a joint initiative between AUS and New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), multimedia design students were selected to present their works in the Festival Internacional de Linguagem Eletrônica (FILE) – or Electronic Language International Festival – Brazil’s biggest art and technology festival, which began on July 2 and will conclude on August 12 this year.
The collaboration was initiated in early 2017 by Zlatan Filipović, Associate Professor from the Department of Art and Design at CAAD, and Felix Beck, Director Lab for Narrative Technologies and Spatial Installations at New York University Abu Dhabi, with the two professors partnering on a project for last year’s festival.
Seeing the unique opportunity to showcase the work of UAE-based students on the international stage, Filipović sought to extend the platform to CAAD students for this year’s show by integrating the project into the curriculum of the CAAD’s Motion Graphics and Video course.
“Students working towards their Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Design created animations and motion designs specifically for the venue in Brazil,” Filipović said.
Six works produced by 11 students from AUS, along with student work from NYUAD, were selected to feature in the festival’s LED Show. For the duration of the show, the façade of Sao Paulo’s SESI-SP Digital Art Gallery is transformed into a giant LED screen to display the work of the emerging artists as they explore the theme of “Language.”
The students’ work represents their regional cultures, from the UAE to Egypt and India, celebrating their own international diversity in this year’s festival of lights through the language of dance, storytelling through movement, script and shape.
“This collection of works curated for the presentation at the FILE LED Show is a survey of contemporary thoughts on the similarities between cultures, as well as contemplation on how to possibly bridge the differences between traditional forms of verbal and nonverbal communication,” Filipović said.
“CAAD is highly competitive and only the most dedicated students advance through our rigorous programs. It is a great honor for every participant to present their ‘language’ to the vibrant, richly diverse and exciting location of Sao Paolo and the FILE LED show as the primary venue,” he said.
The Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Design at CAAD provides students with an intensive background in design, with specialized classes in digital media, motion graphics, animation and film and a wide range of elective classes.
Through an interactive, hands-on approach to learning, CAAD students are offered unique opportunities to apply and showcase their knowledge of filmmaking, interactive graphics, web design, animation, image making, photography and illustration, through local and international platforms, including the FILE LED Show.
“We are particularly grateful to Paula Perissinotto – the co-founder and organizer of FILE – for taking the time and effort to visit our students and provide them with constructive feedback during the production process,” said Filipović.
The six works will be on display in Sao Paolo for five weeks. Images of the work can be viewed online at www.file.org.br.
