AUS students visit Sharjah Heritage Days
A group of 20 students from the Student Multicultural Learning Program (SMLP) at American University of Sharjah visited the 12th edition of Sharjah Heritage Days, themed "Islamic Heritage is One Tent," on April 22, 2014. The visit was part of SMLP's initiative to boost student learning about the rich cultural heritage of the UAE.
Organized by Sharjah's Department of Culture and Information, Sharjah Heritage Days was held in the Heart of Sharjah, and included traditional markets and as well as folkloric shows presented by bands from the UAE and other Islamic countries.
The students enjoyed a variety of traditional events that reflected the social and cultural development of life in the Emirate of Sharjah. These traditional activities highlighted the major achievements of Sharjah that led it to become the Islamic Culture Capital of the Arab Region for 2014.
Students toured traditional houses and learned about the Bedouin way of life through exhibits on cooking, making handicrafts, and methods of agriculture and fishing. The exhibits and detailed portrayal of UAE life in the past fascinated the students, from the nature of the homes and living conditions to the exercise of certain professions, art, rituals and traditions.
"Through cultural visits, we promote the UAE's rich cultural heritage among the young generation. I encourage our students to explore more about our country's history and its developments in a short span of time," said Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, who headed the group visit.
