AUS students volunteer in environmental awareness campaign
More than 20 students from American University of Sharjah (AUS) volunteered in an environmental campaign held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah. Organized by Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority, the campaign was held on December 27 with the theme "Leave No Trace." The initiative focused on environmental awareness and a clean-up drive of desert areas in Sharjah.
Students participated in the clean-up efforts and the placement of garbage bins in popular picnic areas in the desert. In addition, the students assisted in raising awareness about that causes of environmental degradation. The students distributed flyers about the Government of Sharjah's efforts to protect the environment and the existing laws and corresponding fines for environmental offences.
"This is a timely campaign as many people take advantage of the good weather to sit outdoors or gather family members for a picnic in the desert. It is very important that we preserve the environment and leave no trace of harmful materials or waste behind," said Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. "This is a good learning experience for our students and an excellent opportunity for them to express their social responsibility," she added.
The students' participation was arranged by Office of Student Affairs' Community Services Office.
