Over 300 athletes participate in AUS Sharakah sports tournament

Over 300 athletes participated in American University of Sharjah (AUS) Sharakah Sports Tournament held at AUS sports fields yesterday. The sports day, which came after its success last year, comprised of the Sharakah Soccer Cup and the first Sharakah Basketball Cup.

The tournament was part of AUS strategic initiative with schools, Sharkah that aims at helping schools smoothly transferring students to the university level. AUS has signed Memoranda of Understanding with a number of secondary schools in the UAE under the Sharakah program whereby AUS will offer patronage of selected research, cultural, social and sporting activities and events. Sports competitions are part of the ever-growing cooperation between AUS and these schools.

Inaugurating the sporting event, Ali Shuhaimy, AUS Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management, said, "We are very pleased to see this number of students from our partner schools competing for the Sharakah sports cups. This year we added the basketball tournament, and we have plans to introduce more competitions for female students next year."

"We are keen on consulting with our partners to develop future plans to consolidate cooperation and improve all initiatives provided by AUS to the community. We believe the projects that we currently working on will take our cooperation to new realms," added Shuhaimy.

In the tournament, Sharjah American International School - Sharjah Campus won the Sharakah Soccer Cup after beating Sharjah-based Al Ma'arifa International Private School - Team A. For the Sharakah Soccer Plate, Abu Dhabi-based Al Rawafed School beat Al Ma'arifa International Private School - Team B. The Dubai-based International School of Arts & Sciences beat Al Rawafed School to win the Sharakah Basketball Cup.

Shuhaimy presented trophies and medals to the winners of the tournament at this sporting event which witnessed participation from over 200 soccer players and 100 basketball players vying for the Sharakah Soccer Cup and the Sharakah Basketball Cup, respectively.
