Student book sale raises funds for charity initiatives
The AUS Charity Used Book Sale, held from September 2 to 9 at the university’s Student Center, received overwhelming support from the AUS community. A large variety of books was received as donations and a considerable amount was raised from selling the donated books. More than 1,000 books on business, engineering, language, arts and sciences, design and many other topics, including novels, were offered for sale.
The proceeds of the sale will be used to support the Hand-in-Hand project of renovating homes of the underprivileged in collaboration with Sharjah Social Empowerment Foundation.
“I treat my books as treasured wealth. Donating them to the ones in need is a special way to honor your books. With teamwork and collaboration, we produce wonderful things,” said Mohamad Kassab, a sophomore electrical engineering student.
One hundred and thirty student volunteers took part in the weeklong fundraising campaign, where they assisted in sorting, displaying and selling the books.
“We hold the Charity Used Book Sale at the beginning of semesters to help students save money on book purchases. This event also helps to promote sustainability as books get reused and not just thrown away. The book sale is also a means for our students and the AUS community to extend support to those in need as the beneficiary of this campaign is the less privileged members of the society. I wish to thank our student volunteers for their efforts and hard work and to the AUS community for supporting this campaign,” said Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Dean of Students.
The event was organized by the university’s Community Services Division, Office of Student Affairs.
