Learning Better, Learning More (December 2016)
The Faculty Development Center invites you to a talk by Dr. Deepak Sirdeshmukh, Department of Marketing, American University of Sharjah.
Learning, or the process by which new knowledge, skills, and competencies are acquired, is a fundamental component of a student's life on campus. Quality and quantity of learning are key determinants of a student's academic and long-term success. Across disciplines, faculty express widespread concerns about the challenges faced in ensuring that students learn effectively and efficiently. Contextual distractions, the use of sub-optimal learning methods, and a dominant focus on achievement rather than mastery, are just some factors underlying poor student learning.
In this session, drawing from research in cognitive science, consumer memory, neurology, and learning research, I will review a variety of methods that can lead to higher quality of learning. The presentation is framed around a simple and readily accessible model of human memory and information processing. The end objective is to help foster significant improvements in student learning and classroom performance.
