The Library Assistant – Technical Services performs a full range of specialized library functions. Primary duties include maintaining consistent, efficient, and accurate acquisitions processes; perform basic cataloging and other bibliographic work to ensure accuracy of library’s bibliographic database; process serials and update online holdings records; answer questions and assist users at the Library Service Desk.
Job Responsibilities
- Search, create records, and perform bibliographic data entry to acquire book and non-book materials requested by librarians and faculty using the library services platform, Fusion and vendor interfaces.
- Monitor faculty special orders and proactively send notifications with status updates.
- Compile statistical data to monitor order volume and departmental spending.
- Correspond with vendors regarding price changes, duplicate records, cancellations, and claims; prepare shipment documents and liaise with library administration on payment details.
- Process orders for electronic resources, activate eBooks, check access, etc. Process print materials shipments and manage record load transactions while ensuring invoice accuracy.
- Identify and correct vendor-supplied MARC records to maintain database integrity.
- Provide consistently courteous and knowledgeable customer service at the Library Service Desk, assisting users with circulation and inquiries.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall mission of the Library.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) from a four-year college or university.
- Must be able to push loaded book trolleys and lift at least 4.5 kg.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Windows and the MS Office Suite.
- Must be highly detail-oriented with the ability to perform bibliographic and data tasks with a high level of accuracy.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required for faculty, vendor, and student interactions.
- A commitment to providing consistently courteous and knowledgeable customer service at the Library Service Desk.
Qualifications and Skills Preferred
- Two to three years of related library experience or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to work some evening and weekend hours as required.
- Familiarity with Integrated Library Systems or Library Services Platforms (such as WMS, Alma, Sirsi-Dynix, etc.).
- Knowledge of MARC, LC Classification, and subject headings is considered a strong asset.
