Internationally renowned photographer delivers engaging lecture at CAAD

Renowned photographer Horst A. Friedrichs, who is recognized internationally for evocative images of urban culture, delivered an insightful lecture on his work to members of the American University of Sharjah (AUS) community recently at the university’s College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD).

Organized by Lars Harmsen, Associate Professor of Art and Design, the lecture was attended by students, faculty members as well as members of the AUS campus community. Friedrichs shared his approach to the art and craft of photography as he discussed several of his long-term projects which involved taking pictures of people over a span of a decade, while witnessing the disappearance of traditions, cultures, and urban movements.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Varkki Pallathucheril, Dean of CAAD, said:

“It is always a privilege to have internationally renowned guests such as Friedrichs share insights on their work with our students and faculty. CAAD is known for the quality and high caliber of its students and presentations such as this provide them with opportunities to learn various aspects and nuances of the craft from top professionals in the field.”

As a popular trend-setting photographer, Friedrichs also shoots images for advertising and editorial campaigns. He blends classic with the modern, creating images in a reportage style while capturing natural moments on location or in studio. He received the prestigious Lead Award for Best Documentary Photography of the Year in 2008.

Friedrichs is the author of numerous books, including the best-sellers I’m One: 21st Century Mods, Or Glory: 21st Century Rockers, Cycle Style, Drive Style, Pride & Glory: The Art of The Rockers’ Jacket, Denim Style and his latest books Best Of British and Coffee Style. His work has appeared in many international publications including The New York Times, The Sunday Times Magazine, GQ Germany, Jocks & Nerds magazine as well as in Rolling Stone.
