Fluid Spaces: From Culture to Nature (October 2016)
Tanja Deman is a visual artist born in Split, Croatia. She obtained her BFA and MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and her MA in Lens-based Digital Media from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam.
Deman's practice is developing parallely to her physical, emotional and contextual perception of specific spaces, architectures, geological formations and sites. Her works, incorporating photography, collage, video and public art, as well as sociological research, are in most of the cases evocative meditations on urban space and landscape. By observing recently built modernist legacy or various natural sites in her art narratives, she reflects upon dynamics hidden under the surface of both the built and natural environment. With every art project, she tends to portray the subtle crossings and interconnections of our given realities, implying that nature as well as culture is something inside, instead of outside, of us.
