About CEN

As the college with the largest number of enrolled students, the College of Engineering (CEN) at AUS has justifiably earned a reputation as the most popular academic unit on campus.

Our highly qualified faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and comprehensive undergraduate and graduate program offerings have made CEN the premier choice of the region's high school graduates keen to embark on a career in the dynamic field of engineering.

Our innovative programs embody the vision of the university's founder, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, who pointed to the fast pace of change in the pattern of education all over the world. "This is, as all of us know, caused by the revolutionary changes in the field of science and technology and advancement in telecommunication systems and information technology. No country can live in a state of isolation, and it has to learn to adjust to the social, cultural and economic needs," he stated.

Responding to this significant observation, CEN was committed from its very inception to charting a course capable of competing with the very best globally. We have succeeded in blending the best of North American educational practices with the methods used by the finest institutions in Europe and the Middle East.

Even though we have tried our best to make our website as comprehensive as possible, we urge you to come to our campus and see for yourself what makes CEN the number one choice of engineering students around the region!

Sustainability

The College of Engineering (CEN) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) is seeking to build a more sustainable future for its students and the global communities of which they are part. Throughout its research, teaching and other scholarly activities, the college seeks to uphold the widely accepted vision of the global engineering community for the 21st century, to ensure the continuation of life on the planet, making the world more sustainable, secure, healthy and joyful.

CEN practices the values of this vision every day, by housing itself within one of the region’s most sustainably advanced buildings. The AUS Engineering and Sciences Building has achieved the highly sought-after 2 Pearl rating by Estidama, a sustainable development initiative of the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council. The rating evidences the building’s highly efficient use of resources and minimization of waste. It also complements AUS's position as the first university in the MENA region to have a Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) classification for sustainability in higher education, awarded by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). In 2021, AUS was awarded a STARS sliver rating, making it the highest rated university in the GCC region at the time of the award.

The work of CEN’s faculty and students helps progress international sustainability efforts. By advancing design and innovation in engineering that impacts many facets of sustainability, CEN is contributing to the global collaboration needed to find solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges: climate change, population growth and disease, among others. Our faculty and students are at the helm of sustainability-related efforts in the fields of the supply chain, materials science, renewable energy, urban planning, water and environment, energy, construction, Artificial Intelligence, data science and more—all areas that will play a role in securing a sustainable tomorrow for populations across the world.

Together, we are committed to working with the global engineering community to safeguard our tomorrow, in the Middle East and beyond.

CEN Silver Jubilee

American University of Sharjah is the fulfillment of the vision of our founder, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah.

When His Highness raised the UAE flag to inaugurate AUS in Fall 1997, our pioneer students, faculty and staff took hold of his vision to see this new institution shape and impact society and future generations through science, education and research.

Our 25th anniversary provided the opportunity to celebrate the way the AUS spirit continues to be lived out in our lecture halls, studios, laboratories, classrooms, and offices on campus, and indeed around the world, as proud AUSers carry out the vision of His Highness.

From Fall 2022 to Spring 2023, the AUS community enthusiastically celebrated 25 years of impact and achievement. This page features some of the key highlights from this year of impact.

CEN 2.0 Innovation

CEN 2.0 - Empowering future engineers for better success in industry, future graduate studies and as global citizens.

Significant amendments of all seven undergraduate engineering programs were launched in Fall 2023 to ensure the programs are robust and better meet student needs.

CEN 2.0 Undergraduate Program changes include:

  1. Data analytics, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and advanced technology have been integrated throughout all four years of the undergraduate students’ study at CEN.
  2. All undergraduate programs have a reduced number of credit hours needed for graduation, which will help in reducing the study time and cost.
  3. New core and elective courses have been added, focusing on emerging areas in engineering and tailored to meet industry demand.
  4. CEN students will benefit from new sustainability-related courses, preparing them for future jobs where sustainability will be key, regardless of the profession or industry.
  5. To place greater emphasis on practical learning, students will spend more time in the college’s new laboratories, which feature state-of-the-art equipment.
  6. Students will now also need to complete a 16-week internship prior to graduation–up from the previous requirement of five weeks–increasing their employability and workplace readiness.
  7. To support success in the workforce, students’ soft skills will be further future proofed, advancing their aptitude for entrepreneurship, leadership, teamwork, communication and other essential areas.
  8. Understanding the importance of a strong start at university, CEN will offer its first-year students an improved introduction to university life and the discipline of engineering as a result of revisions made to the college’s First Year Engineering Experience.
