Mr. Sharaf was appointed Chairman in May 2023, following his tenure as CEO of HSBC UAE —a role he held for 13 years—while concurrently serving as Head of International, overseeing the bank’s operations in Algeria, Bahrain, and Kuwait. He joined HSBC in 2008 as CEO of Personal Financial Services for the Middle East and North Africa, leading the retail banking business across the region.
Before joining HSBC, Mr. Sharaf served as Chief Executive Officer of NBD Securities, a subsidiary of Emirates NBD, where he played a key role in the organization’s growth within the financial markets.
In addition to his role at HBME, Mr. Sharaf serves on several boards, including HSBC Middle East Holdings BV (HMEH), HSBC Private Bank (Suisse) SA (PBRS), the Higher Board of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the Mastercard MEA Advisory Board, and the Advisory Council of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees at the American University of Sharjah. His previous board roles include HSBC Saudi Arabia Limited, HSBC Bank Oman, Emirates Telecommunications Company (Etisalat), and the Noor Dubai Foundation.
