It may be easier to describe a university press by saying what it’s not. University presses don’t publish college newspapers, yearbooks or course packs. And if you visit a university press, you generally won’t find a printing press.
University presses are publishers. They acquire, develop, peer review, design, produce, market, and distribute books and journals. Unlike commercial publishers, which focus on large markets, university presses select work for its scholarly, intellectual or creative merit, often serving specialist audiences or regional communities of interest.
A university press is also part of the academic ecosystem. As an extension of its parent institution, it works alongside learned societies, scholarly associations and research libraries to support the creation and circulation of knowledge. Most operate on a not-for-profit basis, reflecting their public and educational mission.
Many university press books are scholarly monographs, focused studies written for researchers and students, published in print and digital formats. Presses also publish academic journals across disciplines and, in many cases, books for broader audiences, including history, literature, translation and regional studies.
While university presses share core principles, each develops a distinct publishing program shaped by its institution and intellectual priorities.
