Department head's message

In our programs you will develop excellent critical thinking and writing skills and will become experienced and successful communicators.
Alessandro Giovanni Benati

I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of English at American University of Sharjah. The department is a diverse, energetic community, with students and faculty from all over the world. While we offer an undergraduate degree in English language and literature with concentrations in either language or literature and a graduate degree in TESOL, the Department of English also fosters cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and innovation activities in English language and literature.

Our duty is to provide all our students with the most inspiring, rewarding and well-rounded university experience possible. We help them to engage with the ideas that underpin their subject, to master the skills that their studies cover, and to enjoy publishing and putting their studies into practice. We are constantly integrating new ideas and new technology into our teaching to ensure high student satisfaction ratings. We want our students to achieve the best grades they can so that they are best equipped for a good career in their chosen subjects. We can offer guidance on career choices, too. University is an exciting and challenging experience for students and that starts in the department, where they will be encouraged to make the most of their time with us.

Studying at AUS has opened unexpected doors of opportunities after my graduation. I joined the AUS Office of Advancement and Alumni Affairs immediately after my graduation, where I work as Alumni Affairs Officer. I couldn’t have done that without the help of my English professors at AUS. I’m really grateful to them!

I have been taught to think, and that may be this department’s greatest achievement.

I love what I study; and the English program at AUS has challenged me every semester. I've had wonderful professors who are a joy to learn from, and who lead interesting discussions in the classroom. One thing I highly value about the study of literature is that it explores a wide variety of subjects that intrigue me, such as psychology, philosophy, history, anthropology and sociology – within a single field of study.

Majoring in English is by far the best life decision I have ever made. The courses the English program at AUS offers continue to teach me how to be a creative, articulate and vigorous member in our socially networked world.
