Assistant / Associate Professor of English – Anglophone African Literature
The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with a specialization in Anglophone African Literature to begin August 2027.
The successful candidate should have an active program of scholarly output in their field and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. We are open to candidates with a wide range of approaches within the field of Anglophone African Literature. We are particularly interested in candidates who possess expertise in course and program development. Additional preferred qualifications include a minimum of three years’ experience teaching in North American-style higher education institutions and experience with international student populations.
Teaching responsibilities include a six-course annual load (3/3) in introductory and advanced literature, as well as academic writing and communication courses. Additional responsibilities include contributing to the intellectual life of the department and university through meaningful service, including student mentoring, enrichment events, and participation in shared governance responsibilities.
New faculty at AUS benefit from robust institutional support, including opportunities for internal grants, professional development support, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Department of English is a diverse and dynamic community with wide-ranging teaching and research interests, including literary studies, linguistics, composition, and education. The department delivers the foundational university writing program, and offers a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature and a Master of Arts in TESOL. Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Literature (or a closely related discipline), with a research focus on Anglophone African Literature
- Record of high-quality publications commensurate with rank
- Teaching experience at the university level
Preferred Qualifications:
- A minimum of three years’ experience teaching in North American-style higher education institutions
- Experience with international student populations
