AUS Achievement Academy extends English Through Emirati History course for Spring 2024
Considering the importance of merging cultural heritage with language studies, the American University of Sharjah (AUS) Achievement Academy (AA) announces the continuation of the elective course English Through Emirati History for Spring 2024, following its successful launch in Fall 2023 with an inaugural group of 19 students.
Housed within the AUS Achievement Academy Bridge Program (AABP), the elective courses are main elements of the program's goal to aid new students in developing key personal and academic skills for a smooth university transition. Students who are accepted to AUS but who don’t yet meet the English proficiency requirements can start their AUS experience in the Bridge Program. This program prepares its students for a successful university experience by boosting their English language proficiency and encouraging them to participate in AUS' dynamic campus life.
"The English Through Emirati History course offers an engaging learning experience, covering 45 contact hours per semester. Students will substantially improve their academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in a context that deepens their understanding of English grammar and vocabulary, all while exploring Emirati history,” said Jessica March, Director of AA.
According to Dr. Paul Hudson, Instructor at AA, who is the course creator and materials developer, "This course represents a distinctive blend of language learning and cultural exploration. It allows students to explore the fascinating history of the UAE while honing their English skills in a meaningful context."
Student Layan Karman, who joined the AABP in Fall 2023 and will be joining the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering program in Spring 2024, chose the English Through Emirati History course to learn more about the UAE, its ancient history and heritage while improving her archeological knowledge and enhancing her vocabulary.
“Viewing a series of UAE history documentaries in almost every class inspired me to choose this course as my favorite. It was fascinating and engaging to learn all about the UAE from those detailed and informative documentaries. Dr. Hudson made the classes interactive by initiating discussions and sharing captivating stories. The quizzes and class activities, although challenging, were a key factor in reinforcing my use of advanced vocabulary,” she said.
In addition to the elective course, AABP students will enroll in four additional courses throughout the semester, dedicated to enhancing their academic literacy and communication abilities. Concurrently, students have the option to select up to two general education courses, equivalent to 6 credits, from a curated list of 13 offerings provided by the AUS College of Arts and Sciences, contingent upon meeting the necessary prerequisites.
