The Bioenergy and Solar Conversion Research Group (BSCRG) at the American University of Sharjah advances high-quality research on biomass thermal conversion and the development of bioenergy solutions. Founded by Professor Yassir Makkawi in 2018, our interdisciplinary team integrates particle technology, thermochemical reactor experimentation (pyrolysis, gasification), reactor and process design, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to create sustainable, efficient pathways for transforming challenging biomass and waste feedstocks into biofuels, biochar, hydrogen, and value-added chemicals. A hallmark of our work is the recycling of unconventional feedstocks, the integration of concentrated solar-thermal heat, and other low-carbon strategies to improve process efficiency and reduce emissions, with solutions tailored to hot, arid, and high-salinity environments. Supported by UAE industry partners, international agencies, and AUS Faculty Research Grants, BSCRG bridges fundamental science and real-world deployment, delivering scalable technologies that strengthen the circular bioeconomy and accelerate the clean-energy transition.
