The Bioenergy and Solar Conversion Research Group (BSCRG) at the American University of Sharjah conducts high-quality research in biomass thermal conversion and sustainable bioenergy systems. Founded by Professor Yassir Makkawi in 2018, BSCRG brings together expertise in particle technology, thermochemical reactor experimentation, pyrolysis, gasification, reactor and process design, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The group develops efficient pathways for converting challenging biomass and waste feedstocks into biofuels, biochar, hydrogen, and value-added chemicals. A key feature of BSCRG’s research is the valorization of unconventional feedstocks and the integration of concentrated solar-thermal heat and other low-carbon strategies to enhance process efficiency and reduce emissions. With a focus on solutions suited to hot, arid, and high-salinity environments, BSCRG addresses regionally relevant energy and waste challenges while contributing to global clean energy goals. Supported by UAE industry partners, international agencies, and AUS Faculty Research Grants, the group bridges fundamental science and practical deployment, advancing scalable technologies that support the circular bioeconomy and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.
