16 AUS students receive athletic scholarships
Sixteen outstanding student-athletes at American University of Sharjah (AUS) were awarded athletic scholarships for Spring 2012 at a special ceremony held at the AUS Chancellor's office today, February 27.
Dr. Peter Heath, Chancellor of AUS, and Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, congratulated the students on their achievements.
"It is important for a university to have sports teams and you add a whole dimension to university life," said Dr. Heath to the recipients. "You are an example for your peers and the fact that you have been selected for this scholarship is an honor."
The recipients this semester are Hamad Saleh AlKawari, Ahmed Charif and Khaled Walid Farchoukh for men's soccer; Mohamed Chohayber Zaydan Ghada and Ahmed Elwahab M. Arabi for men's basketball; Fahad Tariq Raja and Shahzada Haris Attique for cricket; Hisham Amin Alayan and Ahmed Al Madani for men's volleyball; Tarun Shyam for men's badminton; Rima Ziad Baghdan and Doha Assem Tantawy for women's basketball; Joanne Y. Mattar and Khalda Imad Eljack for women's volleyball; Sharifeh Yousif for women's table tennis; and Lilian Ghassan Neim for women's swimming.
The scholarship program aims to encourage, improve and develop sports at the university and consists of a 50 percent tuition remission. The scholarship is granted on a renewable semester basis and aims to support the student-athletes who have limited financial recourses and who demonstrate athletic excellence as well as outstanding sports qualities.
Also present at the ceremony were other senior AUS officials.
