AUS board honors pioneering professor

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah and President of American University of Sharjah (AUS), approved the awarding of the honorary title of Professor Emeritus to Dr. Fawwaz Jumean, during a meeting of the AUS Board of Trustees held yesterday March 12, in London, United Kingdom, under his chairmanship.

A pioneer AUS faculty member Jumean led the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences (BCE) from 1998 until his retirement in 2015.

Chancellor Kjervfe said, "I believe that Dr. Jumean is an AUS pioneer who contributed greatly to the overall development and success that the university currently enjoys. He had an exceptional record of administrative achievements and offered distinctive qualities that made him eligible to be awarded the honorary title of Emeritus Professor."

The Ruler approved the University's five-year research Plan and Budget and the Plan and Budget for Phase I of the Research Technology and Innovation Park.

During the board meeting, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah expressed satisfaction at the progress the university has made and reviewed and approved new resolutions pertaining to various university matters. He also thanked the members of the AUS board for their continued efforts.

"On behalf of the university, I would like to thank His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan for his guidance and leadership," said Dr. Björn Kjerfve, Chancellor of AUS. "The support His Highness has provided to the university since its inception is immeasurable. We continue to benefit from his wisdom as we move towards the next phase of our development. I would also like to express my gratitude to the members of the AUS Board of Trustees for their efforts and support," he added.

During the meeting, the board passed a number of resolutions, including a resolution on the adjustment of tuition and fees for Academic Year 2017-2018. It also reviewed matters related to the university's efficient operation and functioning and discussed various plans related to the future progress and development of AUS.

The board thanked the Ruler of Sharjah for his leadership and generous support to AUS.
