AUS retains title in Sixth Men’s Intercollegiate Swimming Competition
The Sixth AUS Men's Intercollegiate Swimming Competition on March 1, 2016 witnessed some keen competition between eight prominent universities in the UAE. Host university AUS won the championship with a convincing lead, followed by University of Sharjah and American University in Dubai, respectively.
AUS swimmers headed the medal tally with seven gold, three silver and one bronze medal. Talmir Ishmukhametov secured first place in the 50-meter backstroke and 50-meter butterfly stroke, while Taher Arafa won gold in the 50-meter freestyle and bronze in the 50-meter backstroke race. Ahmed Eladl won silver medals in the 50-meter freestyle and butterfly stroke, and Amr Mohamed secured second place in the 50-meter breaststroke.
In the 4x50 meter medley relay, AUS swimmers kept their archrivals University of Sharjah well behind and achieved first place. AUS swimmers retained the trophy with 56 points, followed by University of Sharjah with 29 points and American University in Dubai in third place with 28 points. Other participating universities were City University College of Ajman, American University of Ras Al Khaimah, Canadian University in Dubai, BITS-Pilani Dubai Campus, and Skyline University College Sharjah.
Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Dean of Students, congratulated all winners and thanked Student Athletics and Recreation for organizing this yearly competition, which provides ample opportunities for the swimmers from the UAE's universities.
The closing ceremony took place in the Sports Complex with Dr. Mohamed Helal, Director of Student Athletics and Recreation, presenting the awards.
