Student painting exhibition reveals new talent at AUS
A unique collection of portraits painted by students from across a wide range of disciplines at American University of Sharjah (AUS) is currently on display in the gallery of the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD).
Critics have been impressed by the high quality of work produced by the novice artists, many of whom have no prior experience in painting. The works on display highlight the success of the liberal arts model of AUS, which provides students with a broad academic experience across a range of disciplines.
The featured artworks were created in Spring Semester 2018 as part of elective art course ART 241, bringing together students from a variety of academic pursuits, from computer science majors to engineering, business management, and mass communication students, as well as students from CAAD’s various major disciplines of architecture, interior design, visual communication and multimedia design.
Under the guidance of Phil Sheil, Senior Lecturer of Art and Design, the students explored the theme of “Portraiture” in the medium of oil paint on canvas, with a strong emphasis light and shadow, and experimentation with painting techniques such as “impasto”—the layering of oil paint to create a three-dimensional effect.
Final year architecture student Saad Boujane said, “My experience in Introductory Painting has been extremely enjoyable and certainly a fruitful one. Having never painted before, the course has provided me with the confidence and skillset necessary to paint a canvas on my own.”
Sheil has been a member of the AUS community for the past 20 years, teaching art and design to thousands of CAAD students who have gone on to achieve successful careers in architecture and design throughout the region and the world.
“He has been an excellent professor and advisor and helped us with every step of the process, from acrylic painting techniques to expressive ways of using oil paint. The outcome of the Introductory Painting showcases an outstanding spread of skills, all from different disciplines across AUS,” said Boujane.
The student painting exhibition will be held at the CAAD Gallery until Thursday, November 1.
